Hum Along With Me

We have more hummingbirds than we've seen since we put up the feeder.   They are putting on their little sword fights outside the kitchen window and it's just delightful to watch.   I'm sure the males are trying to impress the females.      I looked out the other day and saw a new beauty flying around and trying to get a drink.   He is an Allen's hummingbird with much different colors than our usual Anna's hummers.

Isn't he pretty?   When he flies and fans his tail, it's bright orange.   I hope he brings friends with him, but I haven't seen much of him so he may just be passing by.   Anyway, a second feeder is going up soon and we've stocked up on some sugar since they are very very thirsty/hungry.

We've continued to enjoy beautiful sunny days in the 70's.   Hey, if you're not having Winter, you might as well have nice weather, right?   All the weather people now say that the storm door has opened (a persistent high pressure ridge has given way to low pressure, to be technical) and rains are coming in this week.   And gale force winds.   While I don't love that part of it, we will take any rain we can get.

We went to Cambria again yesterday so here's a photo of the beautiful coast.   Honestly, I am in awe every time I am there.   Have a great Monday!

Just Do It

Today I am driving my friend to have her colonoscopy.   She drove me when I had mine done 5 or 6 years ago.   Are you due or overdue for yours?   Just do it.   Or git 'er done.   Or whatever words motivate you.   It's so important.

More crow photos.   Because I like them and I need to post them somewhere :-)

Just Dropped In

I hope you are enjoying the long weekend.   I know some of you are struggling with the awful Winter weather that's dropped inches and feet of snow on your homes.   I'm sure Spring will be a welcome relief to you.   We had that bit of rain last week and now it's warm and dry again.   Friday it was 82 degrees here, which is much too warm for February.   Trees are budding and blossoming.   It's crazy weather.

Yesterday we spent a nice day.   We drove to Cambria for a walk in the foggy morning, then stopped in to a new place for lunch.   We get in a rut about eating at the same places, so it almost felt like being out of town.   And it was enough that we didn't feel like dinner last night.

And we bought some Olallieberry Vanilla fudge.   It's good.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I'll be back soon!

Part Deux

Crowmageddon, that is.   I really enjoyed working on these photos, starting with some of the Lightroom presets.   Shirley mentioned, and she's so right, that photos of black animals or items are difficult because you can't see the detail.   Don't be afraid to change the colors a bit, not because they're perfectly correct, but because it makes the subject(s) stand out more.   If you have an editing program that allows you to lift the shadows, do that.   It will make certain features stand out that you want to see a little better.  Crows are such a great example because they have cool features and pretty feathers.   These two were in the parking lot at Piedras Blancas where everyone watches the elephant seals (more photos coming on that too).   They were used to all the people and of course were hoping for snacks.   They let me get close enough to capture some photos without scaring them off.

That's my little photo share of the day.   Those of you who are still suffering from this very very unusual Winter, stay safe and warm today.   And enjoy your Tuesday.

Crow-Mageddon

This past week I see crows everywhere.   Lots of crows.   Mostly they are in the vineyards or fields, sitting on posts, making a lot of noise in the trees, gathering walnuts from the orchard, and hanging at the coast.   Since I woke up way too early this morning and couldn't go back to sleep,  I am sharing these photos from yesterday.   I'm too tired to form complete paragraphs so crows are what I have until I get another hour of sleep.   I haven't had a sleepless morning in a long time.   The coffee is not helping, the photo editing is not helping, so I think it's lights out for another hour or so.   zzzzzzzz

The Talk of The Town

The rain, people, it's all about the rain we had on Sunday.   It's on everyone's mind and in every conversation.   Celebration.   Relief, for the moment.   Joy.   Anticipation for more.

I stopped for a moment the next morning and realized there were raindrops on the leaves.   I hadn't seen that in many many months.   It was delightful.   Yes, like little diamonds.

Cue the music...

If it rains tomorrow like it's supposed to, I am definitely going out in search of more diamonds.

New Scenery

Since I moved Beau over to my friend's place, I've had a chance to walk around with my camera and look at the scenery through my lens.   They have a lovely property about 10 miles from our place.   It's been in the family for over 60 years and includes a large walnut orchard which is dry farmed and organic.   With the passing of the storm over the weekend, we had gorgeous clouds hanging around in our bright blue sky all day yesterday.

Looking the other direction

Beau was not impressed with the view.   He was bored from being in his stall all day Sunday and wanted to do something.   With the arena not quite ready for riding, I took him out and lunged him so he could get his energy burned off a little.

Have a great Tuesday!

February

It's a pretty sounding name for a month.   It's about reds and pinks and hearts and birthdays for people I love.   And people I like too.   And it has such a pretty birthstone, Amethyst.   It brings us just a little closer to Spring and pretty colors besides shades of brown.    We aren't sure we will have green hills or wildflowers this year due to the drought, but I can enjoy all of yours.

It rained yesterday.   Rained about a half inch here on the Central Coast.   We celebrated.   When you're living in a severe drought zone and haven't felt the rain in nearly a year, let me tell you, it feels amazing.   Thank you, Mother Nature.

The chickens went all over the property looking for bugs and worms to suddenly appear in the wet ground.   I'm not sure they were rewarded but it gave them new hope.   The donkeys stood under their shelter much of the day and ate too much hay.   Donkeys don't like the rain, not one bit.   They looked a little bewildered.

So February is here and let's hope it brings lots of good things.

The last sunset of January.
