Trick or Treat....at our place

We got out the costumes a day early and went searching for bugs.   Sadly, we came up a little short on this day.   Perhaps we will try again tomorrow.

Orange Moon

It was setting so fast, I did my best to capture some of its gorgeous color.   It was awesome to see, and that is not a term I use lightly.

Stay Safe

All is calm on the West Coast, but I am hoping for the best for friends and family and strangers too who live on the East Coast as Sandy blasts onshore.   Let's hope she leaves quickly and your calm returns soon.

My "Almost Daily" Drive

Henry, my horse, is boarded about 5 miles from our place.   The road between here and there has some twists and turns over a hill.   The view from the top, heading home, is very pretty.   For 3 years, I have thought I should capture the view but either don't have my camera with me or don't think about it until I have passed the one and only turnout at the top.

So this week I stopped.   It's not the safest turnout so I quickly took a few photos and got back in the truck.   And now I have a photo of my "almost daily" view.   Enjoy the weekend!

Quick Stop - Rural Thursday

I see so many sights when I'm driving around during the day.   Too many of them do not allow me to pull over to take photos.   The barn where Cooper is living is a little north of here, alongside the riverbed and the railroad tracks.   And there was a place to pull over when I saw this ramshackle place on the opposite side of the tracks.   Someone needed/wanted to be right next to the tracks when they built this place.   When they left, it became a photo op for people like me!

And if you turn to the left, very slightly, you can see this view on such a gorgeous day.   Just to the left of there is Cooper's  home and the riverbed where we trail ride.   I am hoping to trailer Henry out there today so we can ride with my girlfriend.   Want to come along?

A little rain always brings out the best in Autumn.   I have lots of new photos but haven't put words to any of them.   I just like looking at them:-)

I hope you are all doing well and enjoying my most favorite season.   After all, I named my little ranch after her!

Gotta Love the Internet

This is, IMHO, one of the funniest pages to spring up from the debate last night.   Again, if you don't want to see anything about politics, you may not appreciate the humor in this.   I think it's creative and very entertaining.

Autumn Chickens

At last, we had some rain here and we were able to welcome Autumn to the Central Coast.   And everyone celebrated.   Well, except for the donkeys because they prefer dry dirt and don't like to get wet.   The chickens were especially happy, finding lots of goodies to scratch up in the newly wet dirt.

My Hannah Banana.   She is always next to me when I'm outside because she knows I am the one who can turn over large items that may be hiding delicious pincher bugs.

Clarabelle is an independent girl so she is often a little farther away than the rest.

The backside of one of my blonde girls.   I think this one is Honey because her sister, Taffy, is still a little ragged from a minor molt.

One of my senior girls.   These three have been going through a major molt and it's been hard on their bodies.   But new feathers are coming in and they should be feeling a bit more perky very soon.

I am going to buy more pumpkins today.   The girls have already eaten one and we will have to cut this one open for them very soon.    You can see the Wellsummer (brown hen) is also recovering from a major molt.   Poor scraggly girls.

Many of you are celebrating the glorious colors of the foliage.   I don't have much of that in this area so I love looking at photos of yours and I thank you all for sharing.    Happy Sunday!

I Like Joe

I haven't made political comments on my blog.   If you don't like reading them, it's okay with me.   I just have some strong feelings and sometimes I want to say them out loud.

He is a man with years of experience, who shows his true colors, doesn't read from a memorized set of cards, and I respect those things. Too many politicians are reciting the party line rather than their own thoughts. Call him crazy or a fool for the laughs, I would rather have him next in line than a young Tea Party candidate with no real experience or knowledge in so many areas. Joe is 100% for the middle class....why are so many middle class voters staking their future on a team who is not?

Love Doves?

We always have one dove pair living here, somewhere in the nearby trees.   I have never seen a flock of doves, so last evening I was pretty surprised to see all of these.   Because of the post-rain colors in the sky, they were lit up like little golden Christmas tree ornaments.   I wasn't sure what they were because of the golden color, so I was surprised when I figured it out.   I guess they were just basking in the beauty of the day, just as I was.   I did not have a filter on my lens for these shots.   The little bit of rain we had washed every bit of dirt from the air and left us with gorgeous blues and golds.

October Evening

Sometimes I know the evening sky is going to be beautiful.   Other times it is spectacular and I am very surprised.   I always have my camera close at hand so I can capture the fabulous colors, then download the photos and see what I got.   Every sunset is different and provides a range of colors.   Reviewing sunset photos (about 150 last night) can be so interesting because you can see the colors change over the relatively short period of time it takes for the sun to go down.

This is one of my favorites from last night.   I think this one might deserve a place in a frame on my wall.

Enjoy your Tuesday and I plan to do the same.   After all, it's October!!

Boots, Some Other, and a Mad Monkey

I have written here before about my love of Ariat and their products.   One reason I wear their boots is because I have a high instep and find it very difficult to find boots that are comfortable.   Most Ariats work for me, although there have been a few exceptions.   Now I have come across their line of fashion boots as opposed to the Western style I usually choose.   I reeeeeealllllly like this style and hope they come to a store near me so I can try them on.   I just got 2 new pairs of boots for my birthday (thanks, Honey!) but these may be calling my name.   (Don't read this post, Honey, just move along.)   Christmas isn't that far away, right?

Now for the "Other".....

The temperatures are cooling down as we speak.   Oh yes, finally a day that is going to be in the 80's!!   It should give me some renewed energy and that's a good thing.   I have been spending time each day with my new horse, Henry, and we are a good team.   He's been sore footed and we aren't riding as long, but we are working on that and he should be ready for long trail rides soon.   He had some deep thrush in his heel that has caused inflammation.   With a sore heel, he has been landing toe first at times which causes stumbling.   The vet and farrier are coming out again next week to come up with a shoeing plan that will work to keep him comfortable.   I absolutely love this horse.

I am still looking for a new person to give Cooper a forever home.   A lady took him home to try him, but she needs an older (pushbutton) horse for her and the rest of the family.   And so I keep advertising and hoping the right person will come along for this very very sweet boy.

My chickens are barely laying eggs for us because most of them are molting.   This is a more major molt than I remember from last year.   Poor naked chickens look so ragged, leaving feathers stuck to the bushes and filling the floor of their coop.   On top of that, Taffy is broody.   She does not spend the day sitting on eggs at all, but each night I have to take her from one of the bushes and put her to bed.   Silly chickens.

Lastly, and most important of all, I want to share something with you and ask that you read Shannon's post.   She has bravely shared every detail of her battle against breast cancer since being diagnosed early this year.   Her reason for being a mad monkey is the gross difference between a surgeon's fee for a breast augmentation consultation versus his fee for a breast reconstruction consultation.   It's a consultation fee!!   With this being October, it's a good time to learn what individuals go through while they are coping with the challenges of this disease.   Shannon is not looking for words of sympathy.   She just wants to create awareness so others may help with letter writing if they choose.   She is a strong monkey.

And that is all for today.   Lots of words, only one photo.   I hope you all have a very nice Thursday and find a way to enjoy this transition into Autumn....my very favorite season.

Pom Poms

I guess there are a few other signs of Autumn here, other than the one in the previous post.   *grins*

Our poms are ripening!   They are one of my favorite things to photograph because they are always so bright against the blue sky.   Contrast of colors, it always captures my eye.   I think I will take a few more pomegranate photos, print and frame them for one of my walls.   Maybe the kitchen?   The bright reds can capture my eye every time I walk past.

Pom seeds, anyone?

What Have They Done?

Blogger made some changes this week.   I didn't dig in enough to understand them because most, I'm sure, don't apply to my needs...
