Chickens and Crackers

This is what we do almost every single day.   I must learn how to hold a bowl of Saltines while feeding them to the chickens and taking video at the same time.    It's not that easy, I'm telling you!

Restful Sunday

Yesterday was my restful day.   I needed some mental and physical down time and yesterday was the day I chose.   I fell asleep Saturday night at 8:00 which I never do.   I woke up Sunday morning too early, as I thought I would, had some coffee with Erik, then went back to bed for another hour.   After we took care of the critters, we decided to go to a small cafe in town for breakfast.   I almost never order pancakes, but yesterday I did.   They were large so I took some off the plate before the syrup, brought them home and gave them out as treats for the chickens, donkeys and dogs.   Everyone except our little Harry enjoyed the delicious sweet taste.   We were all in carb overload:-)

We spent a little time outside making decisions about moving vs. trashing a wood pile, locations for more fruit trees next year, and general ideas for our property.   I noticed little buds on our fruit trees which were planted last year.   Yay!!   Our rose bushes have new leaves and our new lilac bush has buds too.   We have some daffodils which were planted long ago before I lived here.   They are up and blooming, but they are so small and never really show themselves very well.   Maybe I should dig them up this year and plant them somewhere else.   Or just get some new ones.

Of course the chickens followed us around, as they do, because they had the pancakes on their little minds. Or crackers or Cheerios or anything else I might throw down.   They are like a chicken army running at me every time I step outside.   Do you think they're spoiled?   Probably.

And when the treats are gone, they walk off to find one of their favorite resting spots.

The rest of the day was just resting, watching some TV, eating a salad to balance out the pancakes, feeding the animals again, watching The Amazing Race and The Mentalist, and going to sleep again.   And now it's Monday.   Time to get some things accomplished after my restful Sunday.

Leaving you with ANOTHER photo of my Calla Lilies.   Have I mentioned how much I LOVE these flowers?

Happy Friday

I'm back!!   I have been busy with selling my young mare, Angel.   And I have been busy with moving my gelding, Beau, to a Morgan trainer about 2 hours north of here to hopefully have a better chance of getting him sold to a wonderful new home.   And so there are things to do when you make changes like that and they take some time, but also are a little mentally tiring.

Yesterday I had the day pretty much to myself to get a few things done around home and around town.   I ended up at Trader Joe's and found some beautiful Calla Lilies.   They are one of my favorite flowers, so perfect in their graceful simplicity.   I love the white but decided to bring a lovely color home instead.

Aren't they absolutely perfect?    This is a plant so hopefully I can find a safe place outside and enjoy them again next year.   Also, I think I may have to change my header again:-)

Put Your Feet Up

I've been busy busy with horse business.   I haven't had time to take photos or think of much to blog about. So I'm asking you to just put your feet up, relax, and I'll be back in a couple days:-)

The Weekend

We had a nice weekend.   After getting some Saturday morning chores finished, we went to the Farmers Market.   We are fortunate to have a FM several days a week in the surrounding towns.   The big one is in San Luis Obispo and takes place on Thursday evening.   I think we've been to that once.   We usually attend the Saturday morning market, pick up a few things, walk around, and sometimes get hot food that will be enough for the rest of the day.    As you can see by the photos, the market is relatively small with small groups of people.   There is a Saturday morning dog training class in the park, of course on the other side to comply with "keep the dogs away from the food" regulations.   Our small-ish towns around here were built during the time when there was usually a center of town with a park and gazebo for entertainment.   I love having a park in the center of town.   It's so nice as a gathering spot, as opposed to strip malls which are so prevalent in California.

You can see it was a drizzly morning and what the recent little bit of rain has done for our grass:-)

I hope you had a nice weekend in your part of the world.   Here's to a good week!

We Call Him Luke

My heart has been hurting over the horses at the auction, heading to slaughter in Canada.   There was one in particular who was tugging at me all week.   He wasn't bailed last week and was the last one from that group without bail as of tonight.  So we paid his bail and he is going to an equine rescue group in upstate New York.   I was near tears and Erik said, "Just pay it."   One of the MANY reasons I love this man so much.   He understands and he has a big heart.

This is the young guy, just 5 years old, who was dumped at the auction.   We call him Luke and I hope he has a long happy life.

Fingers Crossed for Wildflowers

Notice my new header photo?   This is from last year.   This hill is visible from outside our back door, maybe 1/2 mile away.   When I go on and on and on about California needing rain in the Winter months, this is just one reason why.   Our incredibly beautiful wildflowers bring color to our hillsides that we can only see in Spring.   And so we wait throughout the brown season.   And we wait through the chillier temperatures of December and January.   Then, if we're lucky and we've had some rain, the hills start to turn green in February.   And if the stars align, the temperatures and rain are as needed, the wildflowers burst and start our shutters to snapping like crazy so we catch them before they leave.

They are magnificent and that is not overstated at all.

Wish  us luck this year as we wait to fill our files with glorious wildflowers.

P.S.   Please let me know if this color text is too hard to read.   I don't want anyone ruining their eyesight or getting frustrated.

Got Yer Back

Love is when you know without question that someone always has your back.   I know that is true in my life, every single day of the year.   We are happy here on our little ranch, living our lives with as little stress as possible, taking care of our animals, and making sure we are showing our love in some way, each and every day.   And we will probably not do flowers, chocolates, an expensive dinner on this day just because it's designated as Valentine's Day.   Instead, we will just be loving to one another as always.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you feel loved and cared about....and that someone has your back!

It's Simon

Our wild bunny, Simon, is still here.   I don't remember when we first spotted him as a baby last Spring, but he's been around here about a year.   We have enjoyed him so much and worry when we don't see him for several days.

Last night I went out to lock the chickens in their coop, but first stopped to take a photo (or two) of the pretty sky with low clouds over the hills.

I put the lens cap back on, said Hi to the donkeys who were watching me, then turned and saw Simon sitting about 5 feet from me.   He will often run into a bush when he is startled, but he just sat there and let me take photos of him.   After deciding it was all okay, he turned around and started munching on some weeds.   I was pretty happy I hadn't pulled that particular weed when we were out earlier:-)

We just love having this little guy around.   I don't know why he (she?) hasn't gone out into the world to find a mate but we aren't complaining.   As long as we don't have a garden, it's good to have a bunny in the barnyard.

Where's My Camera?

I need to get out and take some new photos!   I have had a couple weeks of doing other things and my camera could be gathering dust.   I thought today might work, but the farrier called last night and is coming this morning to do trims on Harry and Gunny.   THAT is always a rodeo:-)   I hope he brings his assistant this time so I don't have to do the "holding on" part of the work.   They are small but strong.   And being tall myself, it involves reaching down.   They might stand nicely for a while, then suddenly decide they've had enough.   So we'll see how it goes.   Right now, they are calling for breakfast.

I might be able to take off after the donks are done.  I will leave you with this photo I took a while back because I just think prickly pear are very interesting and photographic.

Have a nice Friday!!

Gorillas - WOW!

Look at this video.   Incredible!    I would love to have an experience like this.

I feel better today, but I think I need some of this either today or tomorrow.   What is it about the water that gives us the feeling of serenity and helps clear out the clutter in our minds?

I haven't felt much like writing light-hearted posts this week.   I have been thinking a lot about a topic that breaks my heart, horses going to slaughter.   Fortunately there are some organizations that work tirelessly to find adopters to bail out some of the horses and donkeys.   One of the organizations is called AC4H.

There is an auction in New Holland, PA, where every week brokers buy up horses for a few bucks.   They in turn sell them to the meat guys.   Before the broker resells the horses, he allows AC4H to come in, document and video the horses, and post them on their website and Facebook page.   They are given a certain amount of time (days) to bail them out or they are gone.   So the ladies work long hours to find foster homes, adopters, contributors, etc.   Last week they saved a total of 51 horses.   But every Tuesday, there are more.

It's not a topic some people want to hear about because it definitely is NOT humane euthanasia.   So it's been on my mind and makes me sad.   The people who are working so hard are doing a phenomenal job, but of course not all find new homes.

I had too many horses when my husband passed away 6 years ago, but I was able to find homes for all that I sold.   I did not send any to auction.   I would put them down in a humane way before I would subject them to horrific conditions.

And that's all I have on my mind besides being thankful that my animals are safe and healthy and happy.

Color Choices

Do you ever play with your white balance settings on your camera?   I was changing mine around on the day we went out to San Miguel because the lighting was difficult that day.   I took this photo and because I shot in RAW format, I am able to change the white balance once I download the shot into Lightroom.   It's just one more way of creating more than one photograph from one shot.

Kind of fun, isn't it?

Hang On

Spring is almost here.   Or is it already here?   I can be patient but I'm not sure my lilacs will wait.

A Fresh Face

I found a blog this week that is so bright and cheery, I just love going there every day.   Besides the fact that she shares her fun drawings, she also has some Photoshop tips,  iPad apps, Weight Watchers recipes, and so much more.   I have yet to dig back into her archives, but I am looking forward to doing that.   I always admire people who can draw because I can't.   I just thought you might enjoy her too.   The blog is called http://www.myheartartbygeri.com/

Have a nice Saturday.   I hope you enjoy a little sunshine on your face like this pretty girl.   Well, that's not her face, but you get the idea:-)

Morro Bay Stacks

They are always looming in the background of the natural beauty.   It's man versus the environment.   I should probably add, I have many shots without the stacks.   I wanted them in the background for this shot as a contrast between man and nature.

What Have They Done?

Blogger made some changes this week.   I didn't dig in enough to understand them because most, I'm sure, don't apply to my needs...
