Horses R Us

It has been a difficult couple of days dealing with the logistics of getting the new horses out here....or deciding to leave one there.   Without going into all the details of every phone call, every Email, every Facebook message....Lucas is going to live at a rescue in New York instead of coming home to us.   He is very young, only 4, and has been showing signs of stress.   I get a strong sense of the "right thing to do" and I just felt the long trip out here was not the right thing for him.

Fortunately, I have "met" some incredible ladies on Facebook who work so hard to rescue horses in need.   Lucas is going to live with a lady named Monica who has the first Luke that I helped bail out of the kill broker's lot.   We are making the arrangements and he should be moving there this Sunday, April 1.   I feel so good about this chance for him.   He will get plenty to eat, live in a herd with other horses, eat lots of green grass, and go into a nice stall at night.   Basically, just be a horse.   And what's better than that?   It's perfect!

This is the link to Monica's rescue.   Hers is one of so many, people working on limited funds and donations to take care of precious animals.   We all know people in our blogging community who do the same thing for dogs.   It is an admirable thing to do.

We all have causes we care about.   If you would like to help Monica with hers, I know she and the horses would appreciate it.   If this is not your cause, please just send good thoughts her way for the sake of these animals she rescues.

We Will Have Fruit

Little tiny blossoms on our young fruit trees.   Oh, it makes me happy!

Enjoy your Friday:-)

March Slips By

I know, I sound like so many other people of my age....Where DOES the time go?   March is winding down already and the weather has been as unsettled and uncertain as March weather is supposed to be.   Very warm and sunny, very cold and rainy, windy, windy, windy....pretty clouds in blue skies, dark clouds in grey skies....lots of variations on the theme of March.

Everything is leafing out and we have signs of blossoms on the trees.   Very very small blossoms, but still they are showing a peek at their color and delights to follow.   I wait each year for the Crabapple blossoms, and this year they will (hopefully) be accompanied by our year-old cherry, peach and Asian pear.   And then next year will come the Fuji apple trees.   That will make me very happy and give me ample blossoms to photograph as well as fruit to enjoy.

Remember Simon?   Or Simone?   He/she disappeared for a while....did I tell you this already or was that Facebook?   Anyway, we have BUNNIES!!!   Well, I've seen two bunnies, but that is enough to thrill me beyond measure.   Here is one of the little cuties, through the kitchen window.   I think they are gathering eggs from the hens so they can get busy coloring for Easter.

Speaking of my kitchen window, I enjoy looking at my orange chicken every day.   She is very quiet, doesn't lay eggs, and clearly gathers dust:-/   Ah well, Spring cleaning is a process, right?   A process that has no clear start or finish dates.   RIGHT?

The pesky sparrows are very fat, thanks to all the chicken feed they eat daily.   One at a time can be cute, sitting in the lilac bush while I wait for blossoms.

Our rose bush (I only have two) has such pretty leaves.   We shall see if we get many blooms this year as this is a thrice transplanted bush that was left here by the previous owner.   Admittedly, I don't care about it too much, but it lives on and on.

A little more rain is coming in tonight.   This was our early morning sky looking to the West.   It's breezy, cloudy, unsettled, and just exactly the way March is supposed to be.

I will be back soon with more....more blossoms, more horses, more BUNNIES (?),  and more pretty skies.   Have a good day!!

Home on the Range

All is well here at Autumn Sky.   The situation with the colic was worrisome, the vet came out a second time and treated her.   My friend took both mares home on Thursday and they are back to normal.   Yay!  Of course there is always something when you have animals....Zoey had developed a hot spot on her skin so she was treated to a vet visit yesterday.   She is now on antibiotics and ointment twice a day.   The donkeys and the chickens?   So far, so good.

My two rescue horses are still in Pennsylvania at quarantine farms.   The plan is for them to be picked up by a transport on April 2nd.   With a layover, they should be here about a week later.   Coop has not been sick, knock wood, so he was vaccinated and doing well.   Lucas is clearing out the last of his boogies, had his feet trimmed, and is busy gaining weight.

He is such a pretty horse.   I can't wait to get some photos of Coop.   This  is his video that was done by the broker when he was purchased by the kill buyer.   Such a cute horse and will be great on the trails.

We are expecting some rain this weekend so I'm not sure what's in the plans.   And I really don't care because I like being free and easy, going with the flow.

Our hills are getting greener and I saw a few poppies yesterday.   Getting excited for the wildflowers!

Enjoy your weekend.

Got No Time

I am busy taking care of one mare with colic and another acting like she's on the verge of colic.   So I have little energy or time for blogging.   Here's Harry trying to get a little more friendly with one of the mares while we're out walking around.   I'll be back soon!

The Rain is Gone

What a wild weekend of weather!   This was possibly the biggest storm of the season...well, we haven't had very many so it's easy to take the title.   We had lots of rain around the county and I would guess we had 1.5 to 2 inches here at our place.   Plus the wind!   Why do we always get 45mph wind gusts?   What is it about that number?

The mares, Fancy and Goldie, have been here for a week while their other mama, my friend, is at a horse show.   These girls were among my first Morgans and I love them dearly.   Goldie had 4 foals while she was here and Fancy had one.   Fancy was also my riding horse.   When my friend's dear older horse needed a companion, Goldie went to live with her.   And now that my other horses are either sold or living at a trainer's, Fancy and Goldie live together.   My friend has a nice barn and so they live with her.   We share them:-)

It has been a lot of fun having them here.   I used to have about a dozen horses here at any given time, mostly mares and babies.   It has seemed very empty without them, although Harry and Gunny do their part to fill up the space.   Those two weren't so sure about having to share with the big equines.   They have adjusted just in time for the girls to leave tomorrow.

Here's what it looked like out back this week, before the rains.

The wildflowers will be out very soon, decorating our lush green hills.   Stay tuned for that!

Rural Thursday - Creston CA

There is another little building in Creston that is old and charming.   I don't know its original purpose, but there is a sign in front that says Creston Forge.   As with so many old buildings which are now surrounded by a modern day town, there are difficulties in taking photos while ignoring cars, street lights, etc.   But of course we just do the best we can because these buildings won't last forever....or will they?

Just Gunny

I don't have anything to post today except photos of Gunny:-)    And that's enough for me.

A Handy Gadget

Oh dear, my horses will probably want one of these.   Shhhhhh.....don't tell them about it:-)

Have a delightful day!

You Can Fly

If you have a dream or a vision for yourself, keep it in your sights.   It may take you 50 years to reach it, but it will be worth it when you arrive.   I read so many life stories from inspiring people on the blogs and on Facebook,  I am touched by how strong and resilient people really are.    Take some time on Sunday to sit quietly with your thoughts about what is important to you, or how someone else has touched your life, or what you can do to make some improvement in your world.   Our dreams are important, take time for them to keep them alive.

Friday's Fences

I have never linked to Friday's Fences but thought this photo applies well, so why not?    We have a small town east of here called Creston.   There are some charming old buildings there as well as a good restaurant called The Loading Chute.   There is also a Watering Hole, as you might expect.   I drove out there today to see what I could find that might capture my camera's eye.

This old building is right on the main street through town.   It's so hard to capture buildings like this and yet keep all the more "modern day" stuff out of the shot.   I did the best I could and I like the photos.  So here is one I am sharing with you.

Enjoy your Friday!

Chicken Tones

I have wanted to contribute to Rural Thursday again, but couldn't find anything recent in my files that I wanted to share.   So back to Lightroom!!   Playing around with the different presets is a fun thing to do when you are stuck inside for a SECOND day due to wind gusts and chilly temperatures.   Ok, I know for some of you, California knows nothing of chilly temperatures.   But as I've said before, it's all relative.   And when the wind gusts all day, it's just not fun to be outside even if the sun is shining.   That is supposed to change today.   I think it's another "fill the card" kind of photo day.   Let's hope so.

In the meantime, here is another of Chicken Little, the hen who loves to pose for Chicken Mama.   She has some greens stuck on her beak but we can cover that up with editing:-)

And here she is looking straight into the camera, such a great pose for this lovely model.

The Ford models have nothing on this beautiful girl.

Singing the Blues

I really like Lightroom.   When it's so windy on a day like this, it's no fun to be outside.   So it's good to make the most of being inside.   Having the appliance repairman here for some maintenance on the washer, dryer and refrigerator was not fun.   Looking at a pile of laundry was not fun.   I washed some windows yesterday so I wasn't going to do that again.   I vacuumed and dusted too.   What's a girl to do besides play with the color blue in Lightroom?

Maybe I'll go back outside tomorrow.

He's Safe

Lucas was picked up by some very nice people and taken to their farm.   He was very tired, very thirsty, no doubt very hungry, and has signs of being sick.   Cindy and her husband immediately put a blanket on him when they picked him up.   They had his stall and food waiting for him so he could settle in.   It's hard to imagine the trauma for these horses, living in the hell hole of the muddy lot.   He is one of the lucky survivors.

Photos sent late last night by Cindy after their arrival.    This is his new stall.

A New Horse

I have been looking for a new riding horse, but honestly my heart wasn't in it.   My love of horses has a strong emotional element that's hard to describe unless you have it.   So rather than purchase someone's horse who is very nice, broke, etc., I decided to put my money where my mouth is and rescue one to bring home to California.   This guy was on the kill buyer's lot in Pennsylvania with one last chance to be adopted.   So that's what I did.   Last night he was taken to a safe barn where he will be picked up today by a lady who is going to quarantine him for me.   She will bring in the vet, the farrier, and do whatever is needed to fatten him up and make sure he's healthy.   Then he will ship out here to me.   I feel so good about this decision.   I may not have chosen him if I saw him living at someone's nice home, but he needed me and it makes my heart happy.

I am NOT looking for a bunch of comments saying what a good person I am, what a great kind act this was....please don't lay that on me.   I just want to share this story because it means a lot to me.   So many of you have done and are doing so much for animals, and I applaud that.   We do it because it feels right, and that's enough.

I had already given the name Luke to another rescue horse, but he's not mine, so we decided to use that same name for this guy.

Have a very nice Saturday!

Blue and Green and Yellow

I mentioned yesterday that I needed some blue.   It was actually gray in the morning but it started to clear mid-morning and I saw some of the blue I was seeking.   So I did a few errands and then headed west on Highway 46 toward the coast.   It's such a beautiful drive this time of year because the hillsides are turning green from our rains.   And the wildflowers are starting to show their faces too, always a delight for Californians.

Rather than heading towards Morro Bay, I decided to go the other direction on Highway 1 and head towards Cambria.   This is one of the lookouts on 46 where you can stop and admire the endless vistas.   There was one other car stopped so it was very peaceful.   The peek of blue on the left is the ocean.

When I reached Cambria, the wind was blowing pretty hard and it was actually a little difficult to steady my camera.   But I managed to find some yellow to go with the green and blue....and filled my card in the process.

All I can say is, it was awesome and exactly what I needed.   I have 250 photos to go through so I'm sure you will see more soon.   Or take a trip to Cambria and fill your card too:-)

I Need Blue

I haven't spent any considerable time with my camera in at least 2 weeks.   I am going to take care of that today.   I need to see the color blue.  Any shade of blue.   I get busy with this or that, running here or there, taking care of stuff, being stuck in my thoughts, blah blah blah.   Today I go in search of the color blue.....and green and red and yellow and even brown!

See you back here tomorrow!

What Have They Done?

Blogger made some changes this week.   I didn't dig in enough to understand them because most, I'm sure, don't apply to my needs...
