Walking Dove

We often have a pair of doves living on or around our property.   We've had a pair recently that I've seen using the chickens' water bowl throughout the day.   And I can hear them talking.   Yesterday I saw a dove walking around the area, getting a drink, walking into the donkeys' paddock, and just cruising around.   Why was it walking?

In the evening, as the sun is setting, I am usually outside waiting for the chickens to settle into their coop so I can lock them in for the night.   I took the garbage out and had my camera in hand for those "end of day" photo opportunities.   Then I noticed the walking dove near the garage.   She was walking back and forth and seemed a little confused.   I took some quick photos of her, a little blurry, but kept trying to get closer to her as she wandered around.   Then I looked up and saw another dove on the roof of the garage.   It was as if he/she was concerned about the one on the ground.   I watched for a while and saw the walking dove try to fly up, but she was only able to fly about a foot or two off the ground. We have a gate that goes into the side yard behind the garage, so I opened that gate and kind of herded her in that direction.   She made it into the side yard and I saw her walking around in there.   I don't know what happened to her but I will definitely check today.   Was she young and unable to fly?   Was she a broken dove who can't fly?   I just don't know.   Poor little walking dove.

ohhhhhh poor baby! I am the crazy bird lady. I worry about them. If they die I bury them... make little crosses for them. If they are injured I try to save them.
They are lovely, the doves. We have them here too... for some reason that one probably couldn't fly. Hopefully just stunned and eventually flew off with the other?...

That is so sad...I do hope this is temporary and that she will be able to join her friend soon...Keep us posted...

Doves need to find little rocks to eat in order to digest their food, so you will see them on the ground quite often. She may be alright--but it just appears that she isn't.

I hope she's okay.

You're so soft-hearted. Doves really are such nice birds. I hope this one turns out to be alright.

Actually, I see doves more on the ground than I do in the air or up high. Maybe the love birds were having a spat and she was wanting some alone time! ;-) Seriously, I hope she/he is okay.

I hope she is okay . . . let us know if you see her again . . . I like their sound. We have many visiting us right now. A few years ago a mommy made a nest in the garden house . . .
but . . . never saw any babies . . .

We have so many great birds around our property here. Hoping we have just as many at the new place. Today it's been robins on the scene looking for worms.
Doves mate for life so perhaps it was the mate watching over!...:)JP
