Almost Wordless Wednesday

I can't put up a post without a few words, can you?

Last week's surf was nothing short of amazing.   We had 20 foot waves in our area, crashing over the jetty, breaking so hard that they were cracking.   People were standing with cameras and cell phones against the wall of the rock in Morro Bay, watching in awe.

Others found a comfortable place to sit.

It's massage day....thankfully.   Have a great Wednesday.

Random 5 Friday

1.    Our surf is going to be very high today.   They are forecasting 19 foot waves which is pretty impressive.   I took this photo yesterday at Morro Bay, showing waves about half that.   It should be action packed at our beaches today.   Mavericks, the big surfing competition, starts today up near Half Moon Bay.   That's about 3-1/2 hours north of here.

2.    I am still loving the Lightroom presets I purchased from Trey Ratcliffe's website.   I usually start with one and then make adjustments.

3.    I am getting ready to move Beau to my friend's place over the weekend.   This is a big change for us and I'm a little unsettled over it, simply because we've been at Cheryl's barn for 3 of the last 4 years.   Change is often a good thing, but still not always easy.

4.    HBO was showing "Silver Linings Playbook" this week.   I had wanted to see the movie so I was glad it was on.   I LOVED IT!!   Really, the best movie I've seen in so long.   No, I haven't made good on my threat to cancel HBO....not yet.

5.   Even though we are in a very serious drought, I want to plan a garden.   Not a big garden, but enough space to plant tomatoes and carrots and lettuce.   We can conserve water through shorter showers, but I want to grow a little bit of fresh produce.

Enjoy your weekend and thanks for stopping by!!

Making an Effort

I am not a very engaging blogger, this I know.   I read lots of blogs throughout the day or week, but just don't comment that often.   I'm not sure why that is.   I suppose I can't always think of something to say in that moment.   I enjoy "knowing" many of you and feeling like you are my far away friends. I appreciate your visits and the comments you leave.

I feel I should say that I'm sorry for not engaging with more of you on a regular basis.   It seems a little rude that I don't reciprocate more.   But then again, we all have different reasons for blogging.   Right?   I have never really known why I do this.   I love sharing my photographs.   I have hesitated to make this a personal diary/story of my life.   I love to write, have always loved to write, but I guess I'd rather do that in a private format rather than throwing it out for the world to read.

So what's my point?   Heck, I don't know!   I was reading more blogs this morning and realized that I don't feel like a very good blogging friend to many of you.   I just wanted to acknowledge that.   I am going to try harder to make the effort.

Winter Blues...at the Coast

I've been editing some photos the past few days, some that I took when I drove up Hwy. 1 toward Big Sur, some from last week at Morro Bay, still others that I took yesterday when I went over to Moonstone Beach at Cambria.   They are so blue.

Yesterday the waves were so pretty at Cambria's Moonstone Beach.   The pretty pebbles were sparkling in the sunshine and the water was leaving sparkle trails on the sand.    If only I had that wide angle lens I really really want, I could capture more of the Blues.

Random 5 Friday

Okay, where is January going in such a hurry?   I know most of you in other parts of the country/world might be happy to see her go, but this year is just getting started.   Slow down!

1.    I'm getting remodel fever and really really hope we can do the kitchen this year.   These are the cabinets I'm really liking after thinking about it for years and years.

2.    I'm planning to move Beau (my horse, for those who don't know) to my girlfriend's place as soon as her facility upgrade is complete.   I love the barn I've been with for the past few years, but this will save me on board and also give me a chance to try new things, as well as ride with my friend again.   I hope Beau settles in okay.   We'll try it and see how it goes.   I always have trouble making decisions about my horses.

3.    I was at the coast this week and saw an Airedale.   My sister knows very well, my Airedale who was named Sophie was the dog love of my life.   I was delighted to see one romping on the beach.   I love my doggies, but Sophie was here at a time when I really needed her.   Although she was our family dog, she really was mine.

4.     Erik has a really really bad cold.   Poor guy.   Not much more to say about that, except I hope he feels better very soon.   And I hope I don't catch it.

5.     Dish Network has raised our bill another $5/month.   So I think I will give up HBO.   That'll show them, don't you think?    Yes, I know some of you no longer have TV or cable or satellite or anything.   We don't have high speed Internet as we're stuck with DSL, so we won't give up our TV.   I just don't like that they claim higher costs and raise the price again.   You would think, with so many people leaving Dish and cable and such, they would try to reduce their costs.   Ah well. What's a girl to do?

Have a great Friday and if I don't see you, enjoy your weekend.

Quiet Waters

It's been calm here on the home front.   I like calm.   I had those years of busy busy and hurry hurry.   Go here, go there, schedule appointments, travel for work, keep track of kids' school stuff.   I am so far past that, I only remember it through dreams and photos.   I used to be able to juggle so much in my mind, it now boggles my mind.

I crave serenity.   Peace of mind.   Just enough challenges but not too many.   Just enough responsibility but not so much it overwhelms me.   Making plans but not losing sight of today.

I woke up this morning to chilly temperatures, wind, and a little drizzle.   I think this will be a very quiet day at home and perfect for soup.

I hope those of you in the deep freeze are warming up and feeling the sunshine on your faces.

This and That

Hey, how about the 49ers win yesterday?   Woohoo!   Made us very happy in this household.
I was going to post a photo of Colin Kaepernick but they are all so gorgeous and I felt a little like a grandma looking at a very young man and it didn't seem quite right.   Ha!

The cold weather didn't seem to bother the players, but dang, it's scary cold in many parts of the country.   We're just enjoying beautiful California days with everyone getting more and more concerned about the drought.   2013 was the driest year on record and there is still no rain in the forecast.   We wanted to plant a couple more trees this year since it's now bare root planting season.   With the lack of rain, we aren't going to do that this year.

The locals are getting more and more angry about the vineyards.   And scenes like this in the middle of a Sunday afternoon....for 2 hours a day, every day.

Someone recently said that it takes about 38 gallons of water to produce one glass of wine.   Fuji Water purchased a local winery a couple of years ago and have since purchased hundreds of acres with more being prepared for planting.   Their underground pipes are huge, the size of pipes that are used for municipal water.   What do they care?   If we run out of water, they drill deeper or declare a loss and leave the area.   High and dry.

Enough of that, I just have to get it off my chest every once in a while.

In more good news, my Chicken Little is doing much better.   She is still a little lacking in energy, but eating and drinking and all those things a chicken should do.   I really can't believe she's alive and that I was able to do what I did to save her.   Really.   Fifteen years ago I was shopping and traveling and living a very non-rural life, never imagining I would have chickens or donkeys or horses.   Life is quite surprising, isn't it?

How about another seal photo?   It has nothing to do with anything in this post but that's why I called it "This and That" and not something more specific.

I've worked on this photo in Lightroom because it was taken in the middle of the day and way too bright.   This is the area near Piedras Blancas where the seals hang out.   It may become one of those photos I keep going back to until I'm satisfied.   I do that sometimes.   Obsessive?   Perhaps.

I woke up at 4:00 this morning and now I'd like to go back to bed.   I hope you all have a good day, even though for some it means back-to-work Monday.   Stay safe if you're in that Polar Vortex.

January 3rd Skies

It began with another dramatic sunrise and ended with a sunset that was enhanced by jets leaving behind their trails of color.

In between was a busy day with some amount of stress over a very sick chicken.   I balanced that with some time at my friend's house checking on the progress of her major barn and riding arena changes.   We can't do anything to create the sunrise or sunset, but hopefully can make the best of those hours between.

What's planned for today?   Besides the coffee sitting on my desk, I have absolutely no idea.   And those can make for the best days.   Enjoy your Saturday.

The Boys Are Back

We spent yesterday afternoon at the coast.   We were going to stop in Cayucos but there was a polar bear dip just finishing and the town was packed with people.   So we headed north to see the elephant seals at Piedras Blancas.   Still crowded with people so we drove to a smaller parking area and walked.   I had never been there to see the big daddy seals who came down from Alaska to stake their claim on the females.   And I had never seen new baby seal pups.   Wow, what a way to spend some time.   I am in awe of these creatures.

I took a short video but YouTube has it looking dark and barely viewable.   I'm going to work on that and hopefully post it tomorrow.   Be forewarned, there might be seal overload.

Enjoy your Thursday!

Make it Count

It always feel like a fresh start, even though it's just the next day.   Time to stop and reflect, time to look forward and make it count.   Every single day.

Make a splash, be still, be thoughtful, be kinder and more gentle, be bold....just make it count.

Happy Wednesday!!
